Topographic characteristics such as faults can be expressed by preparing shaded relief map from DEM (digital elevation model).
Shaded relief map alone, however, is not sufficient for understanding some topographic characteristics. In the left photograph, there is a fault extending from upper right to lower left, but it is not expressed in the shaded relief map.
By constructing a topographic model and emphasizing topographic discontinuity of the area at left, dark stringy lineament can be clearly observed from upper right to lower left.
